If you’re planning a trip to the UK, whether for a vacation, work, or a longer stay, you should be aware of a new requirement – ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization). Starting in April 2025, an electronic travel authorization will be required for entry into the United Kingdom, similar to the ESTA system used in the USA.
How do you apply? Who needs it? And what happens if you don’t have it? We’ll explain everything in this article.
The ETA is a new electronic entry authorization system introduced by the UK government to enhance border security. The goal is to screen travelers in advance, reducing the risk of unauthorized individuals entering the country.
This system does not replace a visa—it is intended for travelers who previously did not need any special permission to enter the UK for short stays. The ETA will streamline border processing while ensuring stricter control of incoming visitors.
If you attempt to travel without a valid ETA, your airline or carrier may refuse to board you. In some cases, passengers without ETA may be denied entry and sent back to their departure country at their own expense.
Getting an ETA is quick and fully online. The easiest and fastest way to apply is via the ETA UK mobile app, available for Android and iOS. The entire process takes just a few minutes, and most applications are approved within a few hours to a few days. However, we recommend applying at least 3 days before your flight to ensure it is processed in time.
The ETA is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. During this period, you can visit the UK multiple times, as long as each stay does not exceed 6 months.
